About cocktails

For those seeking a definition, a cocktail is a beverage, which includes one or more parts of liquor. Those who prepare cocktails as a trade are usually called bartenders; and they are organized under the International Bartenders Association, or IBA.

While bartenders prepare or serve cocktails, they strive to create not only tasty but also visually appealing drinks. There is even an international contest every year to help promote the cocktail world.

Preparing drinks is easy and being a bartender is fun. The general rules are to follow the recipe and not to include more than three ounces of liquor per serving, except when you prepare a zombie drink. Any client would like two buy two cups of the same drink to find out they were different from one another.

The legend of cocktail

About the origin of the word 'cocktail', the legend says one day a man won a cockfight and asked his friends over to celebrate. Once there, he asked his daughter to serve wine to everyone in the house; which caused a problem, as she couldn't find enough wine from the same kind to give everyone a cup of the same drink. Obliged to think fast, she got a tub and placed all the wine in it. She mixed it and she served that to her father's guests.

Contrary to what she may have believed, the guests were delighted with the mix.

When her father came to ask, she told him what she did with the wine. While they were speaking, a nearby rooster rustled one of its feathers into the tub of wine while they were there. "A cock-tail", said the father, —therefore, the origin of the name.
