Nombres de los números en inglés y español
Hay dos tipos de números en matemática: los cardinales y los ordinales. Aquí incluyo una lista de sus nombres y algunas explicaciones.
Números cardinales
Son los números que más usamos. Indican o cantidad o magnitud.
En español…
- de cero al treinta, tienen nombres propios
- de ahí en adelante, las dos últimas cifras de un número usan los nombres de las decenas y las unidades
- después de un millón, cada seis cifras habrá un nuevo nombre
En inglés…
- de cero a veinte, tienen su propio nombre
- de ahí en adelante, a las dos últimas cifras se les une con un guion
- después del millón, cada tres cifras adicionales habrá un nuevo nombre, aunque a veces también se usa la fórmula "mill millones"
En ambos idiomas se acostumbra separar cada tres cifras con un pequeño espacio, por claridad. Quienes escriben en computadora utilizan un "espacio irrompible" para evitar que una parte del número pase a la siguiente línea.

Números ordinales
Los números ordinales expresan posición, así que son siempre enteros y no tienen cero.
En español, se abrevia la posición con un signo de grado (º) y también debe recordarse que la terminación puede ser 'o' o 'a' en concordancia con el sustantivo del que se habla.
En inglés, se abrevia la posición escribiendo el número más las dos últimas letras de su nombre (st, nd, rd o th).

Fracciones
Las fracciones usan una combinación de los dos anteriores: un número cardinal para el numerador y un número ordinal para el denominador, aunque con algunos detalles:
En español…
- la mitad y el tercio tienen su propio nombre
- del cuarto al décimo, los denominadores usan el nombre del número ordinal
- los demás usan el nombre del número cardinal más el sufijo -avo, excepto para números redondos mayores a mil, que usan el nombre del número ordinal
En inglés…
- solo la mitad y el cuarto usan un nombre propio
