Don't cover your ears
When there is too much noise, people tend to cover their ears to avoid the uncomfortable sensation noise brings. This is a mistake. When you cover your ears, you force the sound to resonate inside your head.
What you need to do in places with too much noise is to open your mouth, instead of covering your ears. That will allow the excessive sound to go through your Eustachian tubes and your mouth without hurting your ears. After all, that's what the Eustachian tubes are there for.
If you are to place your hands to cover your ears, place them a couple of centimetres away from their entrance. This will help block some sound waves, again, without hurting your ears.
